Bangkok and Pattaya are the classic pairing: a dense, food-obsessed capital and a beach city two hours down the coast. Thailand remains visa-free for Indian passport holders, which is why it is so often the first stamp in an Indian passport.

Thailand's advantage for Indian travellers has always been friction: there is very little of it. Flights are frequent and short, entry is visa-free, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and Indian food is available almost everywhere. Bangkok gives you the Grand Palace, Wat Arun across the river, and some of the best street food anywhere. Pattaya, roughly two hours south-east, is the beach half of the trip and the base for the Coral Island day. On combination itineraries Thailand usually sits at the end, after Vietnam or Cambodia.

Worth knowing

  • THIS CHANGED RECENTLY. The 60-day visa-free stay ended on 15 September 2026 and is now 30 days. The change was published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026.
  • Visa-free entry by land border is limited to twice per calendar year. Arrivals by air are not restricted in the same way.
  • Immigration can ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Carry both.

Checked on 8 September 2026 · Business Standard — visa-free stay cut to 30 days from 15 September, Siam Legal — Thailand approves end of 60-day visa-free stay. Entry requirements change without notice. Always confirm with the relevant mission before booking flights.

Practical

Travelling from India

Airports we use

  • Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)
  • Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK)
  • Phuket (HKT)

Around 4 hours direct from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

When to go

November to February is the cool, dry season and the most comfortable time to travel. March to May is hot — often above 35°C. June to October is the rainy season, which usually means heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, and noticeably lower prices.

Money — Thai Baht (THB)

Cards are widely accepted in Bangkok; markets and songthaews are cash. Exchange rates at the airport are poor compared with the SuperRich-style exchanges in the city. Indian cards generally work well.

Eating, and vegetarian food

The easiest country in the region for Indian travellers to eat in. Bangkok has a large Indian restaurant scene, including pure-vegetarian and Jain kitchens around Pahurat and Sukhumvit. Thai vegetarian food exists but often contains fish sauce or shrimp paste — ask for 'jay' (strict vegetarian) if that matters.
  • Bangkok to Pattaya is roughly two hours by road; most itineraries do it as a transfer rather than a day trip.
  • The 30-day limit is ample for a normal holiday, but matters if you were planning a longer multi-country trip based on the old 60-day rule.
  • Temples enforce a dress code: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, including at the Grand Palace.
