Thailand's capital and the region's main air hub. The old royal quarter holds the Grand Palace and Wat Pho; Wat Arun sits across the river. Modern Bangkok is malls, rooftops and the Skytrain. Most itineraries give it two nights, which covers the main temple circuit and a night market.

Known for

  • Grand Palace
  • Wat Arun
  • Wat Pho
  • Chatuchak Market
  • Chao Phraya river boats

Worth your time

What to see in Bangkok

The sights worth building a day around, and what we would tell you before you go.

  • The golden chedi and tiered roofs of Wat Phra Kaew inside the Grand Palace in Bangkok

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew

The royal complex and the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most revered image, carved from a single block of jade.

Good to know · The dress code is enforced at the gate: shoulders and knees covered, no see-through fabric. Sarongs can be hired but the queue is long.

  • A longtail boat passing Wat Arun on the Chao Phraya river at sunset

    Wat Arun

The Temple of Dawn, its spire encrusted with broken Chinese porcelain, best seen from the far bank of the Chao Phraya.

Good to know · Cross on the public ferry for a few baht rather than a tour boat. Late afternoon light is the reason to come.

  • Wooden boats loaded with fruit and produce at a floating market near Bangkok

    The floating and weekend markets

Damnoen Saduak on the water outside the city, and Chatuchak's 15,000 stalls at weekends inside it.

Good to know · Chatuchak is easier and closer, and there is a good vegetarian food section near gate 2. Damnoen Saduak means an early start.
