A UNESCO-listed ancient town that was a major port from the 15th to the 19th century, and looks it. The old quarter is closed to cars, which makes it one of the most pleasant places to walk in Vietnam. Best experienced in the evening when the lanterns come on.

Worth your time
What to see in Hoi An
The sights worth building a day around, and what we would tell you before you go.
The Ancient Town and Japanese Covered Bridge
A UNESCO-listed trading port of ochre shophouses, almost entirely closed to cars. The 18th-century covered bridge is its symbol.
Good to know · A town ticket covers entry to five heritage buildings and is checked at the bridge. Buy it rather than paying at each door.
The lanterns after dark
Silk lanterns light the whole riverfront each evening, and small boats carry candles out onto the Thu Bon river.
Good to know · The full-moon lantern festival cuts the electric lights entirely. Ask us the dates — it moves with the lunar calendar.
Tailoring
Hundreds of tailors who will make a suit, a jacket or a dress to measure, usually with a fitting the same evening.
Good to know · Allow two nights for anything you care about. A 24-hour suit is real, but there is no time for a second fitting.
