Still called Saigon by most people who live there. The city is the commercial engine of Vietnam and feels it — busier and more forward-facing than Hanoi. The colonial core around Notre-Dame Basilica and the Central Post Office is walkable, and the Cu Chi Tunnels are a half-day trip out.

Known for

  • Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica
  • Ben Thanh Market
  • War Remnants Museum
  • Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Rooftop bars

Worth your time

What to see in Ho Chi Minh

The sights worth building a day around, and what we would tell you before you go.

  • A tank and a Chinook helicopter in the forecourt of the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City

    War Remnants Museum

The most affecting museum in the country, told from the Vietnamese side, with photography that is direct and hard to forget.

Good to know · Not suitable for younger children. Allow two hours and go in the morning, before the tour groups.

  • Cu Chi Tunnels

Two hundred kilometres of hand-dug tunnels outside the city, with a widened section you can crawl through.

Good to know · A half day including roughly 90 minutes each way. The crawl is genuinely tight — there are exits partway for anyone who would rather stop.

  • The clock tower entrance of Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City

Ben Thanh Market and the colonial centre

The city's best-known market, a short walk from the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office designed in Gustave Eiffel's era.

Good to know · Bargaining is expected — start at about half. The food stalls at the back are cheaper and better than the ones at the entrance.
