What to see in Hanoi
The sights worth building a day around, and what we would tell you before you go.
Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple
The centre of the city, circled on foot in about half an hour. The scarlet Huc Bridge leads to a small temple on an island in the middle.
Good to know · The surrounding roads close to traffic from Friday evening to Sunday night, which is by far the best time to walk it.
Temple of Literature
Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070 and still laid out as five courtyards. The stone stelae list graduates going back six centuries.
Good to know · Cover your shoulders and knees. Students come here before exams, so mornings during exam season are busy and worth seeing.
The Old Quarter and its street food
Thirty-six streets once organised by trade, still named for them. This is where you eat — bun cha, pho and egg coffee, mostly from pavement stools.
Good to know · Vegetarians should learn to say 'khong thit, khong nuoc mam' — no meat, no fish sauce. Fish sauce is in almost everything by default.

Breakfast at hotel. Today discover the beauty and rich history of Vietnam’s countryside on a memorable adventure tour from Hanoi. Explore the historic capital of Hoa Lu and visit the famed ancient Dinh King temple. After lunch you will get on bamboo boat - rowed by the local people - in Hoang Long River to visit Tam Coc (three caves) on the way. You pass through three enormous caves that provide a brief respite from the intense summer sun. It takes approximately two hours to go up and down the river and along the way, you witness local fisherfolk, village life along the river and, of course, the striking limestone karst formations that Tam Coc is famous for - a Vietnam UNESCO Site. Pay a visit to Bai Dinh Pagoda , the largest complex of Buddhist temples in Vietnam! Hike up to Mua Cave for an impressive panoramic view of Ninh Binh city. Overnight at Hanoi Hotel.
