A UNESCO World Heritage site and the single most recognisable image of Vietnam. Visited from Hanoi as a full-day cruise, usually including kayaking and lunch on board. It is a long day — roughly four hours of driving in total — but the bay itself is genuinely extraordinary.

Worth your time
What to see in Halong Bay
The sights worth building a day around, and what we would tell you before you go.
Cruising the karsts
Around 1,600 limestone islands rising straight out of the water. Day cruises take four to six hours on the bay, with lunch served on board.
Good to know · From Hanoi it is roughly four hours of driving in total. Leave before 08:00 or most of the day disappears on the road.
Sung Sot Cave
The bay's largest cave, reached by a steep flight of steps and opening into two vast chambers lit to show the formations.
Good to know · The climb is about 100 steps in high humidity. Worth checking before booking if anyone in the party finds stairs difficult.
Kayaking at Luon Cave
Paddling through a low limestone arch into an enclosed lagoon ringed by cliffs, usually with monkeys watching from the rocks.
Good to know · Almost always included in the cruise price. Confirm whether it is a kayak or a rowed bamboo boat if you would rather not paddle.
