Lanzarote

Volcanic country where the ground is still warm a metre down

Photo by Andrea Huls Pareja on Unsplash

A four-hour shore excursion through the Fire Mountains of Timanfaya, where an eruption in the 1730s buried a quarter of the island. Vines are grown in hollows dug into the ash, each behind its own stone wall. There is a camel ride, and a green lagoon in a collapsed crater.
