Singapore is the easiest introduction to Asia for a family travelling from India: safe, clean, English-speaking, and small enough that nothing is more than a short MRT ride away. It usually appears as the polished half of a Vietnam or Thailand combination.

Three nights is the usual allocation and it is well judged. Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay are the postcard; Sentosa is where families spend a full day between Universal Studios and the beaches; Little India and Chinatown are where the city is most itself. The MRT is fast, cheap and air-conditioned, which makes Singapore unusually easy to explore independently between scheduled sightseeing.

Worth knowing

  • The SG Arrival Card is separate from the visa, is free, and is MANDATORY. It can only be filed within 3 days of arrival.
  • Since 30 January 2026 airlines flying to Singapore from India can refuse boarding at the gate if your SG Arrival Card is not on file. This is the single most common way Indian travellers get caught out.
  • Carry a confirmed return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation; both can be asked for.

Practical

Travelling from India

Airports we use

  • Singapore Changi (SIN)

Around 4 hours direct from Chennai and Bengaluru, 5–6 hours from Delhi and Mumbai.

When to go

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so it is warm and humid all year — around 26–32°C with afternoon showers at any time. February to April is marginally drier. Timing matters less here than anywhere else in the region; plan around events and school holidays instead.

Money — Singapore Dollar (SGD)

Effectively cashless — cards and contactless work everywhere including the MRT. Singapore is the most expensive stop on any of these itineraries; budget noticeably more for meals than in Vietnam or Cambodia.

Eating, and vegetarian food

The easiest destination in Asia for Indian travellers to eat well. Little India has an enormous range including pure-vegetarian and Jain options, and most hawker centres have at least one Indian stall. Vegetarian food is genuinely everywhere.
  • File the SG Arrival Card before you leave for the airport. Airlines now enforce it at the gate.
  • Buy an EZ-Link or use a contactless card for the MRT; it is far cheaper than taxis and usually faster.
  • Chewing gum import is restricted, and fines for littering and eating on the MRT are real and enforced.

What is the SG Arrival Card and do I need it?
