Almost every Indian itinerary to Cambodia is really an itinerary to Siem Reap and the Angkor Archaeological Park — the largest religious monument on earth, and one with direct roots in Indian temple architecture.

Angkor Wat is the reason to come, and it earns it. The park is enormous: Angkor Wat itself, the many-faced Bayon at Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm with its strangler figs are the three most itineraries cover, and that is a full day. Siem Reap, the town that serves the park, is small, walkable and geared entirely to visitors. Cambodia is usually paired with Vietnam rather than visited alone, which is why it appears in combination packages — two nights is the standard allocation and is enough for the main circuit.

Worth knowing

  • Visa on arrival is payable in US dollars cash only — cards are not accepted at the counter. Carry clean, undamaged notes.
  • The e-visa costs the same and avoids both the cash and the queue, so it is usually the better option.
  • You will be asked for your Cambodian accommodation address during the e-visa application.

Practical

Travelling from India

Airports we use

  • Siem Reap (SAI/REP)
  • Phnom Penh (PNH)

No direct flights from India; typically one stop via Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

When to go

November to February is dry and comparatively cool, and is the best time to walk the temple circuit. March to May is very hot. The June-to-October wet season brings green landscapes and fewer visitors, with rain usually falling in short heavy bursts.

Money — Cambodian Riel (KHR), with US dollars accepted everywhere

Cambodia runs on US dollars in practice. ATMs dispense dollars, prices are quoted in dollars, and riel is used as small change. Carry small denominations; USD 100 notes are awkward to break.

Eating, and vegetarian food

Siem Reap has a well-established Indian restaurant scene serving the visitor market, including vegetarian options. Khmer food is milder than Thai or Vietnamese and less reliant on fish sauce, though it is still present.
  • The temple circuit involves several hours of walking on uneven stone in heat. Start early — most itineraries do — and carry water.
  • Dress code is enforced at Angkor Wat: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Two nights is the standard allocation and covers the main circuit. A third allows the outlying temples or Tonlé Sap.
